My Areas of Expertise
Maryland
With my homebase in Anne Arundel County, I have convenient access to multiple repositories. I have extensive experience researching families in Anne Arundel, and Charles Counties from the 1700s-today, and have spent time in Washington County as well. Below is a selection of repositories where I have researched:
Maryland State Archives in Annapolis (12 miles)
Maryland Center for History and Culture in Baltimore
Southern Maryland Studies Center in La Plata - (30 miles)
Kuethe Library (Anne Arundel Genealogical Society)
I can visit other repositories as needed - I have gone as far away as Hagerstown in Washington County, and would love a return visit!
Virginia
Most of my own family research has been on families in Virginia due to the letters I received from my grandfather. My family (the Kyles, Hucksteps, Damerons and others) were based primarily in Botetourt and Amherst Counties. I have visited both counties and could do so again, though they are both several hours away. I am very comfortable at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, which is about three hours away.
Illinois
Some of my direct ancestors left the East and Northeast for places in the West. Most of my research has been conducted both online and in person in Princeton at the Bureau County History Center, but some were in Adams and Sangamon Counties.
Colorado
I was born and raised in Larimer County, Colorado - my paternal line is one of the many settlers in the early days of statehood, and, as such, I have done much research into Homesteading and Land Grants. Additionally, some of my mother’s family settled in the mining town of Leadville in Lake County where I have spent many hours exploring and researching. Denver Public Library’s Western History Collection is an excellent repository for all things Colorado and I can stop by next time I’m home to visit my family!
Other Places
While they are very distant to me now, I have done a considerable amount of online research in the area of Lincolnshire in the UK, some southern counties of Sweden as well as Copenhagen, Denmark. One of these days, I will make a visit to all of those ancestral locations, but for now, it’s all virtual. I learned Norwegian in college, which is very similar to both Swedish and Danish, so I do have some understanding of documents in those languages, though I am NOT a translator.
Additional Services
